Below are listed some of the most important items for the SWLers and DXers
realize their listenings and achieve a better integration with this hobby:
-
Receiver:
this item is obviously the main important (without a receiver, listening is
not possible!). There are many types and models of receivers suitable for
shortwave listening, being the better ones those that have features such
as SSB tuning, digital readout, continuous coverage, among others.
-
Antenna:
a good receiver won't have the same performance if it is not connected to an
appropriate antenna, such as dipole and long wire, that work better than the
telescopic antenna that come in with most portable receivers.
-
Headphones:
good headphones are important when external noise dominates the environment.
However, be sure to observe the guidelines for health and safety in the use
of portable headsets (e.g.: do not play your headset at a high volume).
-
Audio Recorder:
an audio recorder, such as a cassette recorder, is useful when you wish to
record a program when you are away (some receivers and recorders has functions
that allow the operation in a predefined time) or when you wish to record parts
of a program to aid in its identification. Some receivers also have a casette
recorder, but these sets aren't usually suitable for shortwave reception,
unless the most sophisticated sets.
-
Books and Publications:
there are several radio related publications, being two of them considered
almost indispensable: the annual publications WRTH (World Radio TV Handbook)
and PWBR (Passport to World band Radio).
-
DX Clubs:
it is important to the shortwave listener to be associated with a DX club, if
he/she wish to increase his/her knowledge about this hobby. There are several
DX clubs worldwide that generally edit periodically a bulletin or magazine.
-
Notebook:
if you wish to make annotations about the listenings such as loggings, control
of incoming and outcoming letters from/to the stations, or any useful details,
a notebook, or even simple paper sheets or file computers, becomes needed.
-
Your Listining's Place:
it can be a little room or even a table; the important is to determine a proper
place to realize the listenings.
